What is Multi-Color E Ink Paper
Multi-Color E Ink Paper refers to electronic paper displays that can show a limited palette of distinct colors—typically 3 to 8 colors—without using color filter arrays. Unlike full-color E Ink Paper (such as Kaleido or ACeP/Gallery series) that can display thousands of colors through color mixing, Multi-Color E Ink Paper uses multiple colored pigment particles directly within each microcapsule to achieve specific, high-saturation colors .
The fundamental innovation behind Multi-Color E Ink Paper lies in its particle engineering. Traditional Black&White E Ink paper uses two types of particles (black and white). Multi-Color E Ink Paper expands this by adding additional colored particles—such as red, yellow, or orange—into the same microcapsules. Each particle type is engineered with different electrical charge characteristics, physical sizes, and inter-particle attraction forces, allowing the display controller to move specific colored particles to the surface by applying precisely calibrated voltages .
This approach represents a significant departure from color filter-based methods. By eliminating the filter layer, Multi-Color E Ink Paper achieves higher reflectivity and brightness, making the colors appear more vivid and saturated—particularly important for applications like retail signage where eye-catching promotional colors are essential.

Key Characteristics of Multi-Color E Ink Paper
● Color Capabilities
Multi-Color E Ink Paper typically displays between 3 and 8 distinct colors. Unlike full-color e-paper that creates thousands of colors through dithering and color mixing, multi-color variants use direct particle movement for each color, resulting in higher saturation and better visibility for specific applications .
The Spectra 6 Multi-Color E Ink Paper with the Ripple architecture can display eight primary colors, achieving a color gamut that significantly improves shadow details, skin tones, and object edge rendering compared to earlier versions .
● Performance Characteristics
Refresh Speed: Multi-Color E Ink Paper generally offers faster refresh rates than full-color ACeP displays, making it suitable for applications requiring more frequent updates. Spectra 6 has a refresh rate of approximately 12 seconds for full updates, though the Ripple technology makes transitions smoother
Brightness Advantage: By eliminating color filters, Multi-Color E Ink Paper achieves significantly higher reflectivity—Spectra 6 is 40-60% brighter than filter-based alternatives like Kaleido 3 in white and yellow areas
Trade-offs: The technology sacrifices some color range (limited palette, lack of cyan and magenta in some implementations) and grayscale capability in exchange for brightness and color saturation
Applications and Market Position of Multi-Color E Ink Paper
Multi-Color E Ink Paper occupies a specific niche in the e-paper ecosystem, optimized for applications where specific, high-visibility colors matter more than photographic color reproduction.
